Bookseller Opinion
So I have to admit that I really am not liking this book so far. I dont know if this is just me but I am getting confused about the order of the events that happen in the book. I know the author is trying to give us background about the family but I can't separate it from the more recent events/information in the book. I also keep wondering what the author's bias is. I'm sure that she has to be leaving some events out in order to make us think of the family the way she wants us to. Although I am not sure how long she lived with the family, I think that you would have to live with a family for a long time in order to have the ethos to portray them accurately in a book.

I agree with Ali. The order of events is a little off and not specific about time and I think that that contributes to the reliability of the narrator and how much we can really believe this story as being nonfiction. I said this in class a while ago: I noticed in the foreword the author really stresses that fact that she hasn't skewed any of the events or thoughts concerning the people that she's living with. However I find that hard to believe because how could she possibly know what these people are thinking during the time of their PAST life experiences. I don't know the whole story seems a little off to me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenny and Ali, although I believe the author is trying really hard to keep her opinions out of the story, it seems a little strange. I like the story and I like how the author states her opinion in the foreword and tries hard to keep it out of the story, but I think that keeping your opinion out of a piece you write is impossible. I also don't like how the chapters are arranged. I also dislike the extra chapters having nothing to do with the family's story. The writing style just seems a bit odd as does the construction of the book, but it is an interesting story.
ReplyDeleteOh and this is Ally, it just comes up as Alex.
I, too, did not enjoy the book. I finished it today, and can say that the story was lacking some definite plot and order of events. Numerous times throughout the book i would look back at previous chapters to try to find this person's relation to the other one, or I would have to re-read a sentence a couple times to understand who this person was. I think it is interesting that at the beginning of her story, the author mentions that she was retelling the story from accounts given by different people about events that happened in the past. When one favors the person you're talking about, facts shunning that person can be ignored, and it the reverse is true, only the dark side of it all is mentioned. The only part that I really found interesting were the story of the carpenter and Leila, but apart from that, I felt as if the narration of the story was a bit odd, as the author was writing only with short sentences.
